CIDER TASTING @ SALVATION

They start 'em young in the 'Shires....

We are very proud to be offering two varieties of Scrumpers Gold cider for tasting at the cafe (buying from Baynham's Farm House, Ledbury, as the cafe isn't licensed).  We had great fun last autumn collecting the fruit from ancient cider fruit orchards at Grafton and Conderton (near Tewkesbury and with sight of May Hill!).  Pete, Colin and Reese pressed the apples (with help from Tim and David) using Baynhams's vintage twin-screw (Colin was overheard commenting that two is always better than one...).  We watched on with baited (well, frozen) breath, as the cider slowly managed to work it's way through the coldest winter I've ever known....and the result is absolutely delicious!  Please come and try for yourself - prices start at £2.50 for a 1l bottle (£1.75 if you have your own container).

We were offline last week so apologies for a rather belated post of last weeks menu, and some photos from the week before.  We are busily planning our Big Chill week menu (Thursday 4th - Monday 9th August) - with the abundance of beetroot in the garden I'm feeling another beetroot and carrot salad coming on (it was so yummy), and a few people are suffering withdrawal symptoms from the Turkey and Sweetcorn meatballs so it seems only fair to bring them back!  We'll be opening on Monday the 9th to coincide with the Big Chill dates, so if you're one of the unfortunate ones stuck in traffic outside Posterity, please pop in!

Dave's Big One.

A recent fishing trip involving three generations of Urquharts resulted in a gorgeous 3lb trout being landed.  How could I refuse when David offered it up for this week's menu?  To accompany it I've knocked up a very pretty and darn tasty 'Pink Potato Salad' (home-grown beetroot, potatoes, spring onions and chives), and a delicious brown rice salad with soy, ginger, lime and coriander.

Spot the penguin...

Also on the menu this week is a slow-cooked loin of pork in honey and ginger, a Rainbow and Herb Salad (Roots own Rainbow Chard), and one of my favourite Ottolenghi recipes - Fennel and Cherry Tomato Crumble (so yummy).

Little Penguin's (website coming soon) cakes compliment the menu brilliantly this week in terms of colour; a beautifully moist Chocolate and Beetroot cake is joined by a marvelous Maple, Carrot and Pecan sponge.  YUM.

I had hoped to post some photos today, but unfortunately (although not for our lovely customers!), we'd sold out of the pork by 14:00 and the majority of the trout.  I'll try again tomorrow.

WE'RE OPEN!

SALVATION CAFÉ @ POSTERITY – NOW OPEN!
Lower Mitchell Barn, Nr Ledbury, Herefordshire HR8 1EG
T: 07813188085
OPEN:  Thursdays 9-3, Fridays 9-5 and Saturdays 10-5.

Pete and his team have done a fantastic job of converting the old fireplace barn in to the new home for Salvation Cafe.  This light and tranquil space is the perfect backdrop for our modern, healthy food, sinful cakes (we can't be good all the time now, can we??), delicious teas and freshly ground coffee, as well as housing a gallery for furniture, art and curios (http://posterity.uk.com/).

Salvation is a haven for everyone; our children's play area has been getting a huge thumbs up from the kids (but mainly the mums and dads!) and our warm and welcoming staff create the perfect atmosphere for enjoying great food in great company.

We use brilliant local suppliers and base our menus on seasonal produce.  It would be foolish not to...

The most amazing display of Minton tiles in our kitchen...

We are LOVING our new venture and have had the most fantastic support from friends, family and our lovely customers.  Look out for future posts regarding 'Salvation's Army'...

I hope to update this blog regularly with our weekly menus, the odd recipe and plenty of news, so please check back and keep in touch - we love to hear from you!
